Luke at Annual Los Angeles USC Southern California Chess Tournament — Great day & lots of fun for Luke & his friends at Goethe International Charter School. Luke (a recently finished 2nd grader) took first place for 2nd grade (64 students competed), with 10 wins. 1 loss. Zero draws.  The 1st place trophy was Goethe International Charter School’s first Chess Competition award (the competition was at USC, with over 400 students competing). It was a truly fun day for all as well as a tremendous learning experience. GICS had 6 students (Jackson, Bennett, Lazar, Luke , Marco, & Liam).  Several schools competing had over 20 students. Hopefully, next year GICS will have a bigger team. Special thanks to Chess Tutors for an awesome prep program! … and finally 3 quotes from GICS touchstone, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:

(1) Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward; they may be beaten, but they may start a winning game. – Goethe
(2) Chess is the touchstone of intellect – Goethe
(3) To venture an opinion is like moving a piece at chess: it may be taken, but it forms the beginning of a game that is won. – Goethe

2nd Set (June 2017) : Luke (8) finishes his one week sleep-away GASA / German Immersion Camp at the end of the month! First time completely on his own. 67 campers this year, with 14 campers from Goethe students participating. Included in the gallery are some of my favorite photos from the camp’s photshare link. He clearly loves the top bunk!
